Controller stick drift: causes and repair options

What drift means

The game detects movement when you are not touching the stick. Settings, debris, wear or an electronic fault may be responsible. The symptom alone does not identify the failed part.

Rule out settings and connection

Check dead-zone and calibration settings if your console or game provides them. Try another game and update the controller following the manufacturer’s instructions. Options vary by platform.

When the problem persists

Movement in several games that does not improve with settings may require inspection of the stick module and board. Do not spray liquids inside the controller.

Repair and verification
